Pastéis de Nata

Portuguese Recipes

Pastéis de Nata are one of Portugal’s most iconic traditional pastries, loved for their rich heritage and special place in Portuguese food culture.

Their history dates back to the 18th century, when monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon, are believed to have developed the original recipe. Following the closure of many monasteries in the 19th century, the recipe was sold to a nearby sugar refinery, leading to the opening of the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery in 1837.

Over time, these traditional Portuguese custard tarts became popular throughout the country and eventually gained worldwide recognition. Today, they can be found in cafés and bakeries across Portugal and are enjoyed by people around the world.
